Denver Art Museum’s Uncorked Reserve Wine Pairings

Molly’s Spirits is a proud sponsor of this year’s Uncorked Reserve 2017. Uncorked is the Denver Art Museum’s spring fundraising event benefiting the museum’s exhibitions and programs. It’s a two-tiered event that includes Uncorked Reserve and the after party – Uncorked AFTERGLO. The evening includes a silent auction cocktail reception in the museum’s Duncan Pavilion, followed by a four-course plated dinner designed by Kevin Taylor Catering featuring exquisite wine and drink pairings with each course. After a live auction, guests are invited to join the Uncorked AFTERGLO party featuring live music and creative treats and cocktails! More information and tickets can be found here.

In anticipation of this year’s event, we’ve put together a list of the wines being served throughout the evening with tasting notes and suggested food pairings for you to use as a guide for your own entertaining needs! These wines were carefully chosen in collaboration with our supplier partners, and will make an excellent addition to any cocktail or dinner party. Look for the shelf tags at Molly’s indicating the wine is a part of Uncorked Reserve and Uncorked AFTERGLO next time you’re in the store!

Cuvee des 3 Messes

Cuvee des 3 Messes Basses, Ventoux Blanc

Rhone, France
“One of my favorite guilty pleasures in the dead of winter is wine that brings me back to the more temperate days of summer. That is why this month (January), 3 Messes Basses, Ventoux Blanc will be a permanent fixture in the beverage fridge. The pretty aromatics of citrus, green apple, peach pit and white flowers are like a mid-winter spa day for the sinuses. You owe it to yourself to turn up the heat and enjoy the fresh flavors of white peach and citrus while basking in the glory of an evening stay-cation. 50% Clairette, 50% Grenache Blanc.” – Molly’s Wine Manager, Scott

Pairs well with: steam jets, dry sauna heat, white meats and seafood

Cuvee des 3 Messes Basses, Ventoux Rose

Rhone, France
“Holy Rose Mania! The amount of Pink goodness that you fine folks have slurped down over the last year is astonishing. In years past, the pulse of Rose consumption was barely palpable, but in 2017 you are rewriting the rules. As Rose supply is on the wane we are having trouble keeping up with your demand. Problem solved – 4 bottles worth of Pink goodness in a convenient 3 liter box.
This January keep your box handling skills on point and drink the pink. This refreshing and crisp rose boasts fresh red berry fruit, hints of kiwi, and subtle citrus on a serious mineral driven platform. 60% Grenache, 20% Cinsault, 20% Carignan.” – Molly’s Wine Manager, Scott

Rhone, France
“The Rouge is the most serious of this boxed trifecta of Ventoux terrior expression. While there is certainly dark beery and plumy goodness presented in this wine – it is so much more. Earth, spice, violets, garrigue and licorice create layers of olfactory and flavor complexity. If your favorite box wine is Franzia Chillable Red please do not purchase this wine – YOU WILL NOT LIKE IT. If you spend time in the French aisle and want a huge Bang for your Box Buck – just say yes to 3 Messes Basses, Ventoux, Rouge. 60% Grenache Noir, 20% Syrah, 20% Carignan.” – Molly’s Wine Manager, Scott

Col Solivo Prosecco, Italy

Reg. $13.98 | SALE $9.98 until Tuesday, January 3rd

“Col Solivo is a joint venture between Charles Lazzara (owner of Volio) and Fattoria Il Palagio back in 2010. The idea came about as Charles was searching for an entry-level Prosecco to compete locally for the coveted by the glass pour for weekend brunch business in the Colorado restaurant scene. The owners of Il Palagio offered some contacts they had in the Veneto region of Italy, home to Prosecco. After several visits to Italy and dozens of winery tastings, the final blend was made and Col Solivo was created. The style is Extra Dry, so there is a creamy mid-palate to this wine with fine perlage to the bubbles. The wine has some residual sugar, as required for Extra Dry classification, which helps round out some of the citrus fruit and provides balance to the wine. It is a crowd-pleasing, affordable sparkling wine created with the idea of enjoyment and drinkability .” -The Importer

Cook’s Spumante, California

Reg. $7.95 | SALE $5.98 until Tuesday, January 3rd

This Spumante is sweet, with fruit flavors, and a long, smooth finish. The aromas of peach and lychee are balanced with a bouquet of toasty yeast notes and floral nuances.” – The Winery

Alma Negra Malbec Sparkling Rosé, Mendoza Argentina

Reg. $19.98 | SALE $15.98 until Tuesday, January 3rd

“The sparkling rose, the non-vintage Alma Negra Brut Nature is made from both Malbec and Pinot Noir. I was surprised how good this wine is. The effervescence is a product of the methode champenoise, and the wine, from a relatively cool climate, displays crisp, elegant acids intermixed with strawberry, cranberry, and fruit cocktail-like notes. It is medium-bodied and just delicious.” – Wine Advocate

Pop, Fizz, Clink! Your Champagne Guide for Ringing in 2017 is here!

We here at Molly’s Spirits take pride in the variety of bubbly options we have to offer, so we consulted our Wine Manager, Scott, for his top picks to ring in the New Year with. In this year’s guide, Scott educates us on “Grower Champagnes” and what they’ll bring to your NYE celebration!

This is our favorite time of year!

It is the time when friends and neighbors make the pilgrimage to their favorite wine store to find the fizzy nectar that they will toast a new year with.  There is a huge range out there and we’re proud to say that we’ve got it covered at Molly’s.  Whether you’re looking for sweet and frothy or focused and razor sharp or something in between; we have something for you.

We have great prices on domestic goodies.  Our shelves brim over with Tony Soter, Roederer Estate, Schramsberg, Argyle, Chandon, Mumm Napa, Gruet, Korbel, Totts, Cooks and many more.

The globe is well represented with sparkling goodness from France, Italy, Spain, Portugal, South Africa, Germany, New Zealand, Argentina, Australia and Greece.

If Champagne is your fancy, celebrate with great prices on Veuve Clicquot, Moet & Chandon, Billecart-Salmon, Perrier-Jouet, Piper Heidsiek, Louis Roederer, Salon, Ruinart, Pommery, Laurent-Perrier, Bollinger, Jacquesson, Taittinger, G.H. Mumm, Nicolas Feuillate, Po.l Roger and Henriot to mention a few.

The Champagnes that are most interesting, and have a dynamic character year to year, are the Recoltant Producer Champagnes also known as “Grower Champagnes”.

In the eloquent words of Terry Theise – Why Drink Grower Champagne?

  1. “You should drink Grower Champagne if you’ve forgotten that Champagne is WINE.
  2. You should drink “farmer-fizz” if you’d rather buy Champagne from a farmer than a factory.
  3.  You should drink it if you’d rather have a wine expressive of a vineyard, and the grower’s own connection to vineyard, than a wine “formed” by a marketing swami who’s studied to the nth-degree what you can be persuaded to “consume.” Do you really want to be reduced to a mere “consumer” when you can drink Champagne like a whole human being?
  4. You should drink Grower-Champagne if the individually distinctive flavors of terroir-driven wines matter more than the lowest-common-denominator pap served up by the mega conglomerates in the “luxury goods” business.
  5. You should drink it because it’s honest REAL wine grown and made by a vintner—by a FAMILY just like yours—by a “him,” not by an “it.” You should drink it because it’s better to buy wine from a person than from a company.
  6. You should drink it because its price is honestly based on what it costs to produce, not manipulated to account for massive PR and ad budgets, or to hold on to market-share.
  7. You should drink Grower-Champagne because, like all hand-crafted estate-bottled wines, it is not a mere Thing but is indeed a BEING, expressive of where it grew and who raised it. In drinking it you help protect DIVERSITY, and diversity leads to VITALITY. And if you’d rather eat a local field-ripened summer tomato rapturous with sweetness instead of some January tomato you buy at the supermarket hard as a stone and tasting of nothing, then you should be drinking farmer-fizz!”

At Molly’s Spirits we are proud to offer you 72 Grower Champagne options this December.  A few of these are listed below.  We invite you to come in and check out our entire portfolio.

Tis the Season for Pinot Noir

A Pinot Noir can be quite the crowd pleaser. They pair well with a range of foods from duck, goose and turkey to mushroom risotto and white pizza – making it a perfect choice for holiday gifts and gatherings! So during this busy holiday season, leave the wine stress to us! Our Wine Manager has selected a few of his favorites and included tasting notes, giving you more time to conquer the holiday season! Less time spent in the aisles = more time under the mistletoe!

Cristom Mt. Jefferson Cuvée Pinot Noir 2013

“Pretty is the word that comes to mind upon sniffing and sipping this wine, with its beguiling strawberry and cherry fruit. It gathers strength in its core, while maintaining an elegant, well-structured acid/tannin frame. It’s an outstanding value in Oregon Pinot from a top producer.” – Wine Enthusiast Magazine

Region/Appellation: Willamette Valley
Country Hierarchy: Oregon, USA

Evesham Wood Willamette Valley Pinot Noir 2015

“This vintage of the Willamette Valley blend shows a bright nose with cherry, earthy mushroom and a slight creamy/silkiness that’s balanced by juicy acid. Showing well now, watch this wine evolve over the next 3 months to 5 years.” – Evesham Wood

“At this price – this is a Willamette Valley Pinot to buy by the case and watch evolve over time. Evesham Wood is an artisinal producer who’s wines perenially shine. The true enthusiast will be rewarded time and again.” –  Molly’s Wine Manager (Scott)

Region/Appellation: Willamette Valley
Country Hierarchy: Oregon, USA

Anton Bauer Pinot Noir Wagram 2014

“Pure notes of red fruits reach the nose: Morello cherry and mulberry harmonize beautifully. Their purity pervades a palate that has the lightest touch: there is something authentic, beautiful and unforced about this. There is a suggestion, too, of herb, moss or undergrowth. This unpretentious winemaking style lets this pure, glorious fruit speak for itself and brings with it a profound sense of honest depth, bountiful earth and full-fruited balance.” –  Wine Enthusiast Magazine

Region/Appellation: Wagram
Country Hierarchy: Austria

Wedell Pinot Noir Santa Rita Hills 2010

“The deep color and the bouquet, a balance of Old World and California influences with black cherry, raspberry and wild berry components are only a hint at what an extraordinary wine we have created. The richness and complexity are reminiscent of a truly exceptional Pinot Noir. We feel that because our 2010 Wedell Cellars Santa Rita Hills Pinot Noir is incredibly balanced, it is readily enjoyable now and will mature beautifully for years to come.” – Wedell Cellars

“Unfined and Unfiltered this 2010 Pinot from the Fiddlestix Vineyard, in Santa Rita Hills, is entering its optimal drinking window. A blend of 5 different Dijon clones intertwine to present an elegant and nuanced wine. Supplimenting the elegant character of this wine, the afternoon sun that Santa Rita is famous for was able to amp this elegant beauty up to 14.9% alcohol by volume; hence it is not “wimpy”. Maurice & Susie Wedell are attentive to every detail in every wine that they make. This is a great opportunity to explore Cali Pinot at the top of its game.” – Molly’s Wine Manager (Scott)

Region/Appellation: Santa Rita Hills
Country Hierarchy: Santa Barbara County, Central Coast, California, USA

Red Car Pinot Noir Estate 2012

“Heftier than the producer’s Platt Vineyard Pinot, this estate-grown wine features astoundingly bright acidity around dense black cherry fruit. It saw 10% stem inclusion during fermentation and was aged in 20% new oak for just over a year, a recipe that works to buoy the wine and give it plenty of complexity.” Wine Enthusiast Magazine

Region/Appellation: Fort Ross-Seaview
Country Hierarchy: Sonoma County, North Coast, California, USA

Red Car Pinot Noir Estate 2013

“The 2013 Pinot Noir Estate Vineyard has a bit more depth than some of the other wines in the range, and that is a good thing, especially in this vintage. Sweet red cherry, blood orange, spice, mint and rose petal are all pushed to the forefront in a deep yet essentially mid-weight Pinot Noir endowed with class and plenty of nuance. The firm, grippy finish suggests another year or two in bottle will only help.” – Vinous/Antonio Galloni

Region/Appellation: Fort Ross-Seaview
Country Hierarchy: Sonoma County, North Coast, California, USA

Red Car Heaven and Earth Pinot Noir 2013

“The 2013 Pinot Noir Heaven & Earth is a little more immediate than most of the other wines in the range, which is a reflection of the slightly warmer microclimate here. Sweet red cherry, plum, lavender, mint and earthy undertones add nuance as this fruit-forward Pinot continues to open up in the glass.” – Vinous/Antonio Galloni

Region/Appellation: Sonoma Coast
Country Hierarchy: Sonoma County, North Coast, California, USA

Red Car Pinot Noir Platt Vineyard 2012

“From high atop the hills above Freestone, this Pinot Noir saw 10% stem inclusion during fermentation and was aged in 20% new oak for just over a year to achieve enviable structure and bite amid an intensity of raspberry and strawberry kirsch flavor. This gorgeous wine will open up even more if held in bottle until 2017–2019. But it’s so good now you’ll find it hard to wait.” – Wine Enthusiast Magazine

Region/Appellation: Sonoma Coast
Country Hierarchy: Sonoma County, North Coast, California, USA

Copain Kiser “En Haut” Pinot Noir 2011

“The upper parcel of our flagship Kiser vineyard continues to yield some of our brightest and most feminine fruit. The 2011 Kiser ‘En Haut’ Pinot Noir maintains the grace, finesse, and consummate elegance of previous vintages. Soft, lovely, and nuanced, this is truly deserving of its reputation as one of our most seductive and sought-after Pinots.” – Copain Wines

“Rumor has it that the cuttings for this vineyard came from La Tache. I can’t confirm this, but I can confirm bright red fruit, savory umami notes of brown Asian spice and beautiful integration. Clocking in at a forgiving 12.7% alcohol by volume – this wine deserves to be on your table.” – Molly’s Wine Manager (Scott)

Region/Appellation:Anderson Valley
Country Hierarchy: Mendocino County, North Coast, California, USA

Underwood Pinot Noir 2015

This Pinot works hard for the working people. Telling a truly Oregon story, the wine draws from vineyards across the state. Each site adds its unique mark to the final Underwood blend, which highlights the rich juicy flavors of Oregon Pinot at an extraordinary price. The perfect wine to enjoy anywhere, any day of the week. The Winery

“Underwood Pinot Noir is a Staff Favorite. Lighter in style, it is unpretentious and delivers the textbook darker cherry, raspberry and plum notes we expect from Oregon. The perfect guilt free Tuesday night sipper.” – Molly’s Wine Manager (Scott)
